The occupational diseases are those which may arise out of employment, the working environment has got direct effects on the Health of the persons who are present in that polluted area. That polluted environment may be responsible in causation of occupational Diseases or in exacerbation of other non-occupational Diseases

The state of health of workers can influence his / her ability to work safely and efficiently. The environmental factors such as presence of containments / pollutants in the atmosphere, physical factors, heat radiation, humidity, noise, hazardous chemicals etc have got effect to the state of the health of workers while working in that polluted work environment. Their health can adversely be affected by high concentrations of substances that are introduced from manufacturing and use in industry day by day.

Workers exposed to all the above listed toxic agents are at risk of suffering from occupational Diseases. Therefore, it is vital and important that all these workers are protected against occupational illness and kept in a healthy state.

In many cases, occupational Diseases are severe, deadly and irreversible. However, some factors make them easily preventable by identifying, measuring the concentrations levels and controlling them.

Some of the occupation Diseases as per the Indian Labour legislations on occupational Safety and health such as The Factory Act, The Mines Safety Act, dock safety Act, BOCW ACT etc are as follows

  • Silicosis / Asbestosis / Byssinosis
  • Manganese poisoning/ Mercury poisoning/ Arsenic poisoning / Benzene poisoning/ Chrome Ulcerations, lead poisoning, poisoning due to phosphorus Compounds/ poisoning due to halogens Manifestations due to radio active substances
  • Dermatitis caused due to chemicals / paints/ mineral oils handling/ petroleum products etc
  • Noise induced hearing loss.
  • Pneumoconosis / bronco pulmonary tuberculosis
  • Disease due to exposure to carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Sulphide, Hydrogen cyanide.
  • Occupational Cancer, occupational Asthma etc.
